How David Morrell and ‘Rambo’ Helped Dissolve the USSR

You may already know all about David Morrell, the legendary bestselling author of First Blood (the 1972 novel that the entire Rambo franchise is based on.) What you may not know, however, is that Rambo actually had a pretty big part in dissolving the USSR

Now, Morrell (AKA: Rambo’s Father) hadn’t actually set-out to achieve something so historic; he never could’ve known the power his words might hold while he was putting them on the page. And he didn’t actually learn about Rambo’s involvement in the dismantling of the Soviet Union until about fifteen-or-so-years after the initial Rambo adaptation was released.

At Thrillerfest this past weekend, Morrell recounted the story of how Rambo‘s influence in Poland came to his attention.

During the early 2000’s, Morrell was visiting Poland on a book tour and noticed straight away that he was being treated, well, differently

The flag that maybe things weren’t exactly as they seemed was that Morrell was visiting Poland at the same time as then-President Bill Clinton, and they happened to be staying in the same hotel. Despite the fact that the literal President of the United States was currently staying there, David Morrell was the one the hotel staff decided to place inside the Presidential Suite; Bill Clinton stayed in the second-best room, the suite usually left for authors.

Morrell thought that this was strange, but assumed that maybe there was a glitch in the system or something, so he didn’t really think too much about it…that is, until things got even stranger

The next clue was that, like clockwork, journalists were lining up to interview and speak with him, just one after the other in a seemingly-never-ending cycle:

It seemed like fifteen minutes would go by before a new journalist approached me…it got to the point where, eventually, I was being interviewed by this nice Polish woman, about thirty-five years old or so…and I just asked her, ‘what’s going on? why is everyone so excited to meet me?’

The woman informed Morrell that, during the late eighties and early nineties, while Poland was struggling to cut-ties with Russia, the Soviet Union had banned the Rambo film from entering the country. So, the people did what any citizens trapped within the confines of a fascist-ruled state would do; they smuggled copies of the film into the country, hosted illegal viewings, and soaked up every bit of activism, justice, and rebellion they could, before taking to the streets.

In fact, demonstrators speaking out against the USSR found Rambo so inspiring that they drew from his speeches, wardrobe, and the entire energy he encompassed to make their protests that much more powerful.

The journalist looked at Morrell and stated,

So, you see, people love you here because Rambo helped dissolve the USSR.

It’s incredible just how powerful books and films can be, and the influence art can have on us; people have used music, novels, artwork, poetry, and more to protest injustices since the beginning of time.

So, let’s all take a piece of advice from David Morrell by creating the things we feel compelled to create, fearlessly and without a second-thought; we never know just how important they may turn out to be.

Sabrina

13 ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Quotes for a Spellbinding Week!

I don’t know about you, but when I was little (and by little I mean currently today as a fully grown adult) all I ever wanted was to awake one morning to find that I had become a teenage witch à la Sabrina.

Just think about how much more convenient life would be if, at the point of your finger, the world around you could change? You’d never have to wake up early to get ready and commute to work, you could just point and boom, you’d be ready! You could freeze time, erase all of your embarrassing moments from the ether, and never have to worry about a thing! You would have complete and total control over your life.

I think we can all just admit that Sabrina is goals. *sigh* Maybe someday…

In the meantime, soak up these thirteen quotes (and all the nostalgia that may ensue) from our favorite teenage witch, quirky aunts, and sassy ex-dictator kitty!

Mrs. QuickMen rule the world, and they do it by oppressing women, forcing us into stereotypical roles and shoes that create permanent foot problems… remember, a woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.

Sabrina: It can take years to develop a craft. Look at my aunts Hilda and Zelda.

Josh: Which craft were they involved in? Which craft were they involved in?

Sabrina: Witchcraft? Who said anything about witchcraft?

Salem: I’m a cat, I’m curious, so kill me.

Sabrina: What’s the matter? I have to be a witch, I have to be a mortal, I have to be a teenager and I have to be a girl all at the same time. That’s what’s the matter.

Harvey: Why do you need college? Let’s stick to our plan, after graduation we load up my bus and travel the country following the music.

Salem: I need a little fresh air and a latte.

Sabrina: So, can I ask you a question? Ever felt like you don’t fit in?

Jenny: Only all the time, but I don’t want to fit in! I researched it, and awkward people tend to be much more successful later in life. I look at Libby, I see tragedy!

Zelda: Because sometimes, when things get tough, denial is all we have.

Sabrina: Woohoo! I’m normal! Gotta go tell the cat.

Jenny: But I like weird. I love weird. I bask in the glow of weird.

Salem: Don’t ask me. I was an English major.

Sabrina: You are so weird!

Salem: [nodding] It helps break up the day.

Sabrina: I want a world where you can escape your problems and not learn anything.

martin will never come out with Winds of Winter, I'm calling it now.

George R. R. Martin Reveals New Information About “Winds of Winter” and Fans Are Shook

Following the news of HBO ordering a pilot episode of a prequel to Game of Thrones and fans are *shook*.

So is George R. R. Martin, apparently.

Martin took to his blog, Not A Blog, to dispel some rumors, set the record straight as to what the prequel will entail, and to remind readers that Winds of Winter is still coming. Most importantly, he reassured fans that he won’t be writing the pilot episode and possible eventual series, but only consulting, saying:

And yes, before you ask, work on Winds of Winter continues, and remains my top priority. It is ridiculous to think otherwise. If I wasn’t busy with Winds, don’t you think I’d be scripting one or more of these pilots myself?

Given that Martin has been saying he’s been focusing on nothing but Winds of Winter, the novel could be finished anytime between tomorrow morning to the end of time, there really is no telling.

Along with the updates around the Winds of Winter completion and release, Martin assured fans that none of the characters featured in the Game of Thrones series will be appearing in the prequel. According to him, the untitled prequel will be set ten thousand years before Game of Thrones, making it impossible for any of the characters to be relevant or possible in this series.

As with most Martin projects, the end result comes out a lot later than everyone expected. Taking into consideration that the prequel project has no director, location, cast, or even a title, the pilot episode probably won’t be out for a good, long while.

Regardless of how long this new endeavor may take or what it will entail, fantasy and Martin fans rejoice.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover Might Be Our New ‘Willy Wonka’!

Now, as you may already know, a brand new adaptation of Roald Dahl’s ever popular Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is currently in the works

The film is being written and produced by Simon Rich (The SimpsonsSaturday Night Live) and David Heyman (Harry Potter) under Warner Bros., with director Paul King (Paddington).

Now, although there are already two previous adaptations (the second being the darkly strange Tim Burton version starring Johnny Depp and the first, obviously, being the original 1971 classic starring the one-and-only Gene Wilder), this new adaptation already sounds like it’s on the track to being something completely unique and original. And now, according to Colliderone of the few actors shortlisted for the starring role as Willy Wonka himself is none other than Donald Glover.

Glover amassed a wide-reaching fame over the past decade; revealing that his talents and skills expand far beyond any one singular artistic route, and that he is, in fact, good at everything. His music under the pseudonym Childish Gambino is poetic, unique, political, influential, and everything in between (if you haven’t yet watched, click here to see the vitally important, relevant, and powerful video for This is America). He was incredibly charming and hilarious as the playful, childlike, and lovable Troy Barnes on the NBC series Community and has been killing it in the box-office as Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story (not to mention the fact that he’s the creator, writer, and star of Atlanta). So, in other words, Glover’s versatility isn’t even up for debate. And, I have no doubt that his Wonka would be so fun. and interesting and layered.

However, this is Hollywood and nothing has been stated as being set-in-stone quite yet; other stars stated as being shortlisted for the role of Wonka include Ezra Miller and Ryan Gosling. So, either way, it sounds like the new Willy Wonka adaptation will be starring someone worth watching!

(Still, wouldn’t Donald Glover be the coolest Wonka ever?)
