It’s pretty much every author’s dream to have their books made into movies. Some authors get them a lot more than others, with movie studios often getting the rights as soon as a new book is published. In this list, here are the top five authors who have the most movie adaptations made in the English language. There are some sequels and made-for-tv movies that might go unnoticed, so forgive me. This will also only include living authors, so you won’t find Shakespeare, Doyle, or Austen here.
5. John Grisham – At least 9
Mostly known for legal thrillers, and surprisingly ‘Skipping Christmas’ which would then become the movie ‘Christmas with the Kranks,’ Grisham’s books- turned-movies were popular in the 90s, but nowadays not so much.
4. JK Rowling – 10
Ah yes, the ever-growing infamous Harry Potter author has made so much money with the eight original movies, and two prequels with Newt Scamander. Who knows what will happen with the series, but either way, it’s sure to make a splash.
3. John le Carré – At least 11
Known for spy stories and mystery fiction, his books have been made into several notable movies including The Spy who Came in From the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. There are new books coming from him about Brexit in Britain, so it’s only a matter of time before they become movies.
2. Nicholas Sparks – At least 11
The author that launched a thousand romantic dramas, and a thousand recreations of that kiss in the rain. Authoring The Notebook, he has made his niche in romance novels that turned into not critically lauded movies, but movies that make a pretty penny, so props to him.
Stephen King – At least 34
Unsurprisingly, topping the list is the Master of Horror himself. The movies are as famous as the books themselves, including The Shining, It, Misery, and Carrie. As soon as a new book of King’s is written, it heads off to production. There are so many more adaptations coming out, that it’s likely he will continue to top lists like these until the end of time.
