Our Wishes Have Been Granted! 14 Upcoming Live-Action Disney Movies

Great news, Disney fans! The company has had such great success with live-action films like, Cinderella (2015), The Jungle Book (2016), and Beauty and the Beast (2017)that they’ve decided to turn tons of your favorite Disney classics into live-action productions. There are also some bonus ones in here too.

 

We’ve compiled a list of the live-action films that Disney has in the works in order of their expected release date. 

 

 

1. Christopher Robin (Expected release date: August 3, 2018)

This live-action movie will feature a grown-up, working class Christopher Robin, played by Ewan McGregor. Robin will encounter his old childhood friend Winnie the Pooh (voiced by the legendary Jim Cummings) and help Pooh find his lost friends.

 

2. Mulan (Expected release date: November 2, 2018)

Mulan will be based on the original Disney animated film in which the daughter of an older warrior disguises herself as a man in order to fight in a war alongside her trusted dragon, Mushu. Lu Zhengyu has signed on as a writer. 

 

3. Mary Poppins Returns (Expected release date: December 25, 2018)

Emily Blunt will play Mary Poppins, who visits a now grown-up Jane (Emily Mortimer) and Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw). Poppins will help their families remember the joys of magic.

 

4. Cruella (Expected release date: 2018)

Emma Stone is rumored to play Cruella De Vil in this live-action film as we explore the villain from Disney’s 101 Dalmatians.

 

5. Peter Pan (Expected release date: 2018)

Disney’s Pete’s Dragon remake director, David Lowery, has signed on to direct Peter Pan’s live-action remake. Toby Hallbrooks (also Pete’s Dragon) is on writing duty to make this adaptation spectacular. 

 

6. Dumbo (Expected release date: March 29, 2019)

Tim Burton will be directing this live-action film with a star-studded cast. You can expect to be dazzled by Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Michael Keaton, and Danny DeVito. 

 

7. Aladdin (Expected release date: May 24, 2019)

This remake directed by Guy Ritchie will star Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and Will Smith as the Genie. Production is currently underway in London.

 

8. The Lion King (Expected release date: July 19, 2019)

This CG-animated film will feature Donald Glover as Simba, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and James Earl Jones as Mufasa.  

 

9. The Little Mermaid (Expected release date: TBD)

The Little Mermaid’s talented cast includes Sara Bareilles as Ariel, Rebel Wilson as Ursula, Darren Criss as Prince Eric, Titus Burgess as Sebastian, and John Stamos as Chef Louis. 

 

10. Tinker Bell (Expected release date: TBD)

So far, all we know is that Reese Witherspoon will be playing Tink, and that’s more than enough for us to get on board.

 

11. Pinocchio (Expected release date: TBD)

As this is still in the early stages of production, rumors are flying that Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Spectre) will direct, however, nothing has been confirmed just yet. 

 

12. James and The Giant Peach (Expected release date: TBD)

The original story is about James, a young orphan who lives with his two mean aunts. He befriends bugs that live inside of a peach before he journeys to NYC. However, not much is known about this adaptation just yet. Last we heard, Disney wanted Sam Mendes for this as well.

 

13. Oliver Twist (Expected release date: TBD)

Rumors are that Ice Cube signed on for Disney’s Oliver Twist live-action musical. He is said to produce and play a major role, reported back in 2016, but little has been heard since. 

 

14. The Sword in the Stone (Expected release date: TBD)

It has been reported that Bryan Cogman, writer-producer on Game of Thrones, will write the script that will be produced by Brigham Taylor. This has been in the works since 2015, but no new information has surfaced.
