Whenever an aspiring novelist hears how young other writers were when they got their first book published, it’s not good. It’s not a good feeling. It doesn’t feel unlike someone threatening your dog. You feel a bodily disdain for said author. Mary Shelley was how young when she wrote freaking Frankenstein!? (She was eighteen.) Disgusting.

 

But, as is typical when hatred is involved, putting faces to names helps. Seeing an author’s young little mug makes you feel things for them. You can imagine how excited they must have felt when an agent finally okayed their desperate query letter. They probably treated their friends to drinks.
