Books to Read After Finishing Netflix’s ‘Carmen Sandiego’

Calling all V.I.L.E. agents and Carmen Sandiego fans! It’s no mystery why everyone is in love with our favorite scarlet thief; Netflix’s hit animated show is as addicting as it is binge-worthy. I stumbled across it during quarantine and easily became a Carmen Sandiego fan. Once I completed the final season (and finished crying my eyes out) I found books to teleport us right back into the action with Carmen. Enjoy my list and make sure to have your fedora ready!

1. Secrets of the Silver Lion

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Well on her way to her next caper of course! In this novel, tag along with Carmen and the crew as they fight off VILE once again. For centuries, the magnificent Throne of Felipe has stood with two empty spaces beside its famous silver arrow—spaces where the silver castle and lion should have been. And now, with the recent discovery of the silver castle within a secret vault in Seville, Spain, the hunt is on for the third silver icon. With all three pieces in place, the throne will be enormously valuable—making it a hot item on VILE’s radar. Now it’s up to Carmen and crew to find the silver lion before VILE does, and protect the throne from winding up in the wrong hands.

2. Who in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?

It’s only right that we go back to the beginning! Fans of the OG show and admirers of the newer adaptation from Netflix will benefit from this great prequel to our favorite anti-VILE agent. Although the first two episodes are spent showing a glimpse behind Carmen’s backstory, this novel allows you a great peek of the mystery that is Carmen Sandiego. Old fans and new will get closer to answering who in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

3. The Story of Frida Kahlo: A Biography for New Readers

When I was growing up, I used to love to read biography books on historical figures geared towards kids (don’t judge me). Whether it was King Tut or Abraham Lincoln, I devoured historical facts. Frida Kahlo is one of the most celebrated artists in the world, but before she made history with her beautiful paintings and brave spirit, she went through a life-changing accident that would have made many people want to give up. This Frida Kahlo children’s book shows you how she fought to overcome setbacks and follow her passion to create amazing artwork in order to make the world a more colorful place. The vibrant colors and amazing facts within makes this book perfect for anyone looking to get to know the iconic Frida Kahlo better. It’s perfect for the kiddos, teachers and those young at heart who just love history. Not to mention, it’s a great full circle moment since Carmen protected a Frida Kahlo painting in season three. You’re welcome.

4. Artemis Fowl

You know I had to finish off the list strong! Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl was definitely a no brainer when I created this list (although it has more fantasy elements than Carmen Sandiego, it’s definitely not far off). A book about a teenage criminal mastermind and his fight against dangerous tech-savy fairies? Totally ‘add to cart’ worthy. Twelve-year-old criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl has discovered a world below ground of armed and dangerous–and extremely high-tech–fairies. He kidnaps one of them, Holly Short, and holds her for ransom in an effort to restore his family’s fortune. But he may have underestimated the fairies’ powers. Grab this book now to see how Artemis fares! You can also stream the movie on Disney+.

I love Carmen Sandiego, but ultimately I love what she represents: resilience, determination and always fighting the good fight. The final season will have me in my feels for a while, but these books are sure to help with Carmen Sandiego withdrawals. At least until we get the live action movie! Happy reading!
