Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
Lord Sebastian Flyte and Charles Ryder
“You know, Charles,” he said, “it’s rather a pleasant change when all your life you’ve had people looking after you, to have someone to look after yourself. Only of course it has to be someone pretty hopeless to need looking after by me.”
While their relationship does eventually become strained, Sebastian and Charles have a close friendship that they form as undergraduates. Sebastian introduces Charles to his eccentric and aesthetic friends, as well as his family in their mansion—Brideshead Castle. Charles gets the family he never had growing up.
Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter and Ron Weasley
“He must have known I’d want to leave you.”
“No, he must have known you would always want to come back.”
Harry and Ron’s friendship starts on the train to Hogwarts and just accelerates from there. They have each other’s backs no matter what. Harry is also basically another son in the Weasley family, as they always welcome him with open arms. Although they may get into spats, Ron is usually by Harry’s side no matter what comes their way.

On the Road by Jack Kerouac
Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty
“Sal, we gotta go and never stop going ’till we get there.’
‘Where we going, man?’
‘I don’t know but we gotta go.”
Sal and Dean’s relationship was inspired by that of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady’s real-life friendship. Although Dean was not always there for Sal, they still deeply cared for one another and accompanied each other on amazing adventures and road trips spanning the U.S.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson
“Now, Watson,” said Holmes, as a tall dog-cart dashed up through the gloom, throwing out two golden tunnels of yellow light from its side lanterns. “You’ll come with me, won’t you?”
“If I can be of use.”
“Oh, a trusty comrade is always of use; and a chronicler still more so. My room at The Cedars is a double-bedded one.”
Detective Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. John Watson are great examples of what friendship is. They stick together through everything—with Watson translating Holmes somewhat crazy schemes into reality. The point is that they never give up on one another no matter what may happen.
Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
“Well, everybody does it that way, Huck.”
“Tom, I am not everybody.”
Tom and Huck could not be more opposite. Tom is raised by his aunt, goes to school, and is essentially taken care of. Huck has no home and is forced to fend for himself. Through all of their hijinks, they continue to be friends despite their differences.
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
Buck and Thornton
“John Thornton and Buck looked at each other. “You poor devil,” said John Thornton, and Buck licked his hand.”
Thornton saves dog Buck from abusive owners and they form a bond forever. Thorton treats Buck with respect, and Buck loves him unconditionally. In The Call of the Wild, Buck—a dog—narrates, giving the relationship and new perspective.
The Lord of the Rings Series by J.R.R. Tolkien
Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee
“I am glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam.”
Frodo and Sam have such a strong relationship—which is not unusual after all they’ve been through together. Sam was originally also Frodo’s gardener, but accompanied him on his quest. They were both part of the Fellowship and Sam and Bilbo were the only two to ever give up the ring willingly.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Fitzwilliam Darcy and Charles Bingley
“We do not suffer by accident. It does not often happen that the interference of friends will persuade a young man of independent fortune to think no more of a girl whom he was violently in love with only a few days before.”
While Darcy’s “loyalty” may have gotten in the way of Bingley and Jane’s relationship, he is still a very good friend. While Bingley mostly sees the good in everyone and loves to be social, Darcy is quick to judge and is quite the opposite in social situations. Differences aside, they have great respect for one another and make a great pair.
