9 Squirrel Girl facts to celebrate Squirrel Appreciation Day

Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day, so I figured why not honor and bring light to arguably one of Marvel’s most powerful characters, Doreen Green, AKA Squirrel Girl. Her appearance and positive attitude might make other heroes and villains scoff, but she’s proven her abilities time and time again. Here are nine facts to get you up to speed on this absolutely lovable hero who “kicks butts and eats nuts.”

1. She was created by Steve Ditko and Will Murray.

Ditko is most well known as the artist and one of the co-creators (with the legendary Stan Lee) of Spider-man and Doctor Doom. He worked with writer Will Murray, who wanted to write a more lighthearted hero.

2. Squirrel Girl’s First Appearance

She first appeared in an anthology titled ‘Marvel Super-Heroes #8’ in 1991. The story revolves around Squirrel Girl teaming with Iron Man to take on Doctor Doom.

3. She’s a huge Iron Man fan.

In that first appearance, Squirrel Girl ambushes Iron Man to tell him she wants to be his sidekick and fight alongside him.

With a bushy tail and other squirrel-like features, Squirrel Girl has the power to talk to squirrels, is quite adept in hand-to-hand combat thanks to her intelligence, and superhuman, squirrel-like agility, acrobatics, strength, speed, and durability.

5. Squirrel Sidekicks

As any Disney Princess will tell you, having animal companions to talk to and aid you is essential. With her ability to talk to squirrels, Squirrel Girl connects with and befriends two squirrels as companions who are named Monkey Joe and Tippy Toe.

6. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl

Why is Squirrel Girl called unbeatable? Well, she’s taken down some of the biggest and baddest Marvel villains, including Doctor Doom, Thanos, and Galactus, to name a few. If that doesn’t earn you the title of “unbeatable” and one of the strongest Marvel characters, I don’t know what will.

7. Squirrel Girl: Avenger

In the comics, there is the main Avengers team, but there are also numerous splinter teams that carry Avengers in their title. Squirrel Girl became a part of the Great Lakes Avengers, a team of misfits and down on their luck heroes. She would leave this group to move to New York and eventually become a New Avengers member.

8. Her Own Series

After her first appearance, she only appeared one other time before disappearing from Marvel comics for a decade. In 2005, she appeared in the Great Lakes Avengers, making a welcome return. Finally, Marvel gave her her own comic series entitled The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl in 2015. She’s now had several of her own graphic novels.

9. Squirrel Girl to live-action?

Squirrel Girl has made numerous appearances in Marvel cartoons and video games, but she has yet to appear in live-action. In 2017, Freeform announced it was working on a New Warriors TV series that would feature Squirrel Girl. However, the series never got past the initial phase of production.

But, with Marvel’s ever-expanding universe, there’s always a chance we could see the character in live-action soon.
