There are a select few movies that when they come on TV frequently I can watch them over and over again. The Parent Trap, 13 Going On 30, Dirty Dancing, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Mystic Pizza, and Never Been Kissed are among the few. Yes, that is a lot. No, I am not ashamed of it, because there’s another I can’t live without.
10 Things I Hate About You is a must-watch. A modern take on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this 1999 hit is an absolute favorite. New student, Cameron, falls for Bianca, but she can’t date because of her father’s one rule: Bianca can’t date unless her moody older sister Kat does. Cameron desperately enlists the help of the mysterious bad boy Patrick to tame the frightening Kat. In a tangled web of bets and crushes plus a bangin’ 90s playlist, it’ll be on your must-watch list too. Here are nine quotes from the movie that will strike you right in the nostalgic heart.
“I don’t like to do what people expect. Why should I live up to their expectations instead of my own?”
Patrick: Is she worth the trouble?
Cameron: I thought she was—
Patrick: Either she is, or she isn’t. So give it a shot, or don’t give it a shot. But either way, don’t let anyone make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want. Remember that.”
3. You don’t always have to be who they want you to be, you know.
Referring to Bogey’s party: A lame excuse for all the idiots in our school to drink beer and rub up against each other in hopes of distracting themselves from the pathetic emptiness of their meaningless, consumer-driven lives.”
Bianca: There’s a difference between like and love. I like my Sketchers. But I love my Prada backpack.
Chastity: But I love my Sketchers.
Bianca: That’s because you don’t have a Prada backpack.”
Kat: You can’t just buy me a guitar every time you mess up, you know.
Patrick: I know, but there’s still drums, and a bass, and maybe even someday a tambourine.”
Not all experiences are good. You can’t always trust the people you want to.
Just because you’re beautiful doesn’t mean you can treat people like they don’t matter.
I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme. I hate it, I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around, and the fact that you didn’t call. But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
