It’s still early in 2016, but this year is already shaping up to be a very good one for fans of science fiction and fantasy. We’ll get our first Harry Potter story in nearly a decade, a long-lost J.R.R. Tolkien book, and a whole lot more. These are the 2016 book releases that we’re most excited about.

When it comes to fantasy, no author can claim a bigger impact than J.R.R. Tolkien. So you can imagine the excitement that followed when a new story of his was discovered last year. This April, fans will get their first chance to read the uncovered tale, which prefigures some of the legends that ended up in Tolkien’s The Silmarillion.

World of Warcraft is one of fantasy’s biggest franchises, but you might be more used to seeing it on a computer screen than between book covers. This book is out to change that – it’s the first part in a series of new tomes about the history of Warcraft’s fictional world. It’s a big, glossy, beautiful book with full-color paintings as illustrations.

Enter Claudia Gray, with a new account of the events preceding Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s an exciting time to be a fan.

Ben Bova is one of science fiction’s most legendary writers, and the anthology series that Baen is putting out is a great place for new fans to start. Volume I of the series was just released earlier this year, and Volume II will follow this summer. Both volumes collect Bova’s short fiction.
