7 Sassy Quotes from ‘The Sea of Monsters”

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Sea of Monsters, let’s take a look at some of the sassiest quotes from the book!

Book Culture

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan combines two of my favorite things: Greek mythology and sarcasm. The books follow half-blood Percy Jackson as he fights his way through mythological heroes and beasts come to life–all while never losing any of the sass. The second book in this epic series, The Sea of Monsters, was released 15 years ago today. While we could celebrate with some blue food on its 15th anniversary, I thought it would also be fun to take a look at some of the sassiest lines from the book.

1.”Families are messy. Immortal families are eternally messy. Sometimes the best we can do is to remind each other that we’re related for better or for worse… and try to keep the maiming and killing to a minimum.”

2. “‘You weren’t able to talk sense into him?’ ‘Well, we kind of tried to kill each other in a duel to the death.’ ‘I see. You tried the diplomatic approach.'”

3. “That was so completely unfair that I told Tantalus to go chase a donut, which didn’t help his mood.”

4. “She pulled her blanket around her. ‘My fatal flaw. That’s what the Sirens showed me. My fatal flaw is hubris.’ I blinked. ‘The brown stuff they spread on veggie sandwiches?’ She rolled her eyes. ‘No, Seaweed Brain. That’s hummus. Hubris is worse.’ ‘What could be worse than hummus?'”

5. “You’d think getting chopped into a million pieces and cast into the darkest part of the Underworld would give him a subtle clue that nobody wanted him around.”

6. “My mom made blue waffles and blue eggs for breakfast. She’s funny that way, celebrating special occasions with blue food. I think it’s her way of saying anything is possible. Percy can pass seventh grade. Waffles can be blue. Little miracles like that.”

7. “We only came close to dying six or seven times which I thought was pretty good. A minute later Annabeth hit a slippery patch of moss and her foot slipped. Fortunately she found something else to put it against. Unfortunately, that something was my face.”
