Today’s the day! After four years with a President we would all rather not talk about, the United States of America officially welcomes Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as acting President and Vice-President. Today also marks a historic event with Kamala Harris achieving many first. Harris is the first woman and first woman of color to hold the role of Vice-President. However, before she was the first Black and South Asian female Vice-President, Harris was an author. So, in honor of this amazing achievement, here are 3 books written by Kamala Harris!
The Truths We Hold: An American Journey is Harris’ memoir following her life growing up as a daughter of immigrants in Oakland, California. Growing up with an esteemed economist and an admired cancer researcher as parents, both of whom were civil rights activists, Harris developed a commitment to speaking the truth and a passion for justice (even though it shines through the unjust prison system in America). Throughout her novel, we see her journey as she goes from prosecutor to District Attorney for San Fransisco, and eventually, to chief law enforcement officer for the state of California. This journey of how her personal life shaped her professional life is a truly insightful one to see with inspiring quotes throughout the novel that you won’t be able to forget!
Superheros are people we all love and admire in our childhoods and even into adulthood. Superheros are Everywhere is Harris’ children’s book dedicated to highlighting a different type of superhero to children. Not one with supernatural powers, but instead, one that doesn’t wear a cape. Throughout the book, Harris shows children that superheroes can be regular people by highlighting her friends and family as the heroes in her life! This book has an empowering message great for kids (and adults) everywhere and can remind us all to be grateful for the people around us by seeing how they are the heroes in our lives.
As Harris never failed to mention in her memoir, justice is her passion. She was first elected San Fransisco district attorney in 2003, however, her decisions while she held that role have been a point of scrutiny during her vice-presidency campaign. As Harris’ first book, Smart on Crime focuses on criminal justice reform by delving deep into how to make the prison system truly, not just rhetorically, tough. Since we are preparing to have her as our new vice-president, this book offers insight into some of her ideas and is worth reading to get to know her perspective, no matter how controversial.
