Henry VIII's Prayer Book Could Sell for Millions

The Reformation is expensive

A 50-page illustrated English prayer book from the 16th century is being auctioned off at Sotheby's. It is believed to have belonged to a young Henry VIII. According to The Guardian, the book is expected to fetch about £2.5 million, which is incredible given that it sold 156 years ago for £84.

The book, called The Bute Hours (named after its 20th century owner, The 5th Marquess of Bute), was made around 1500 during the plague, which broke out in London between 1499 and 1500. The opening illustration in the book is that of St. Roch, who is the patron saint of protection against dreaded disease.

The prayer book will be auctioned off on December 6th.
