Ethan Hawke, star of The Purge, is set to play abolitionist leader John Brown, as well as co-writing the script alongside Mark Richard of Fear the Walking Dead.

The Good Lord Bird is a historical fiction novel set in Antebellum, Kansas. It follows a young boy, born into slavery, who becomes involved in John Brown's antislavery movement. The boy, Henry, must pass as a girl in order to survive. The book eventually follows Brown and Henry to the 1859 raid on Harper's Ferry - one of the major catalysts for the American Civil War.
