Amazon’s Lord of the Rings slays GoT as most expensive show ever

The realm of television is reaching the stars as far as quality and talent are concerned with big-name properties taking over the entertainment landscape. The price tag for these productions is now the newest precedent in the industry with the likes of Netflix and Disney pushing production costs to the level of modern films. The Boys, WandaVision, and more accurately Game of Thrones have ushered in the age of expensive seasons with tons of CGI to flood the small screen. The most spent one a season was pushing toward the triple digits but now a new contender is coming to shoot well past that milestone set by Game of Thrones years prior. Amazon, being the titan that it is, will now house one of the most expensive television shows ever made based on one of the most beloved franchises in modern times The Lord of the Rings.

The much anticipated Lord of the Rings Prime-exclusive show is breaking records well before a release date is pegged. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon’s ambitious prequel series will cost $465 million on the first season alone which in and of itself is a record-breaker. Game of Thrones by comparison only reached that cost for an entire season by its 6th season. Amazon and the by extension the New Zealand government stated that the show will cost approximately $1 billion to produce between two seasons completely trumping any show currently in development. Producers of the upcoming series are already naming it the next Game of Thrones craze as a possible 5 season deal is being made should this first season gain traction only adding more money to the mix however that’s not the only step Amazon is taking from its competitor.

In 2017, Amazon had already spent 250 million on acquiring the rights to the franchise and since then details have been intentionally sparse. What is known is that the show will take place a whole millennium before the events of both film trilogies. An airtight writers’ room was formed not too long after the show’s announcement. An ensemble cast has been formed with Eddard Stark himself Robert Aramayo leading the trope while being joined by Morfydd Clark, Joseph Mawle, and Markella Kavenagh. The filming continues in New Zealand since February of last year though it is still unclear whether production of this first season is beginning to wrap.

Regardless, Amazon Studios has still penned a 2021 release for its streaming platform. With the collaboration of Amazon, Harper Collins, and of course the Tolkien Estate, this Lord of the Rings project seems to be a delight to longtime fans of the series since the conclusion of The Hobbit trilogy back in 2014. I for one am giddy with excitement that the same amount of resources used in the films is translating to the small screen with flying colors. Hopefully sometime not too far away we can all experience the world of man, orc, elven, and dwarven doing battle across Middle-Earth soon this year.

The film will have everyone reprising their roles, which includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams and even Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, who we haven’t since the end credit scene of the first ‘Doctor Strange’.

The movie will also feature Elizabeth Olsen reprising her role as Wanda Maximoff presumably right after the end of her show, ‘WandaVision’.  We were left shook and gagged at the conclusion of the Disney + hit and now fully embracing herself as the Scarlett Witch, we have no idea how she comes across Strange again; whether she goes to him for magical studies help, or if he actually comes to her for help to stop Mordo, who could be the villain for the sequel is up in the air.  Will she start her journey to find her boys in the multiverse and will Strange be a friend or foe in her pursuit for her children?

The sequel is also slated to introduce America Chavez into the MCEU. The young super hero will be played by Xochitl Gomez of Netflix’s ‘The Babysitters Club’. Let us know what you guys think! How excited are you to see Doctor Strange 2? And what do you think Wanda’s involvement in the movie look like?

3 Big Names Join A Few Upcoming DC Films

DC comic movies are back and better than ever. Coming off of the recent success of the Snyder Cut of Justice League, Warner Bros. has brought more good news to follow the next slate of comic book films: new castings. After troubling news of the cancellation of a few promising DC adaptations, it’s relieving to hear some good news about the projects still in the works. However, the castings aren’t just for one upcoming film but rather three. Black Adam, The Flash, and Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods all have already had big names attached but now more fan-favorite characters join the pantheon of heroes and villains.

First, we have the casting of the villain in the sequel to 2019’s electrifying Shazam. Zachary Levi and Asher Angel will reprise their role as Billy Batson/Shazam only to face off against the mysterious Hespera now set to be played by Dame Helen Mirren. Not much is known about the character as she is a new addition to the DC Villain line up making the casting all the more intriguing. Being a goddess of the art of acting Mirren will very likely bring the charm and gusto to rival the fury of the gods.

The Upcoming Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson led Black Adam already teased the arrival of the JSA (that’s Justice Society of America to non-nerds) but now the final casting has arrived from the ashes. The JSA has received their magical powerhouse in Dr. Fate now being played by 007 alum Pierce Brosnan. A quick rundown of the gold helmeted sorcerer, Kent Nelson is an archeologist that discovers the helmet of Nabu, a magical lord of order. With the helmet, Kent transforms into Dr. Fate, a hero of insurmountable magical abilities who is a founding member of the JSA. Brosnan will now join the likes of Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Quintessa Swindell playing Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone respectively in their efforts to thwart the tyrannical Black Adam.

Lastly, the much anticipated Andy Muschietti The Flash film recasts Henry Allen after a slew of rumors of the character being omitted from the movie. Ron Livingston of Office Space fame will now replace Billy Crudup as the father of the scarlet speedster. Crudup briefly appeared in both of Warner Bros. Justice League films but had to drop the role due to a scheduling conflict. With Livingston at the helm, Henry Allen can once again have the huge parental role in Ezra Miller’s timeline bending film which according to speculation should cover an alternate version of the fan-favorite Flashpoint arc. Henry Allen is framed for murder as his son Barry Allen/ The Flash seeks to become a forensic analyst to clear his name only to find that his superhero persona has much more to do with the alleged crime than he believed.

With comic book films returning to form since the start of the pandemic last year, it’s amazing to see that despite the dire circumstances creators take the time to cast brilliant performers in these pivotal roles. The inclusion of fan-favorite characters and new faces to the genre always fills the air with giddiness as comic fans and casuals alike can relish in the performances between the light and color shows. Black Adam is slated for an early June 2023 release with The Flash racing in November the same year. Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods is pegged for a summer 2023 release in June that year.
