This Book of Wallpaper Samples Could Literally Kill You

When I heard about a book titled Shadows from the Walls of Death, by Dr. Robert M. Kedzie, I was immediately intrigued. And then I started reading about it, and couldn’t help but cackle. The opening paragraph from 99% Invisible is so unintentionally hilarious that I can’t help but not share it with you:   In an era when two thirds of American residences were home to poisonous wallpapers, an awareness-raising book was published.  But the ominously titled Shadows from the Walls of Death did more than warn consumers of health risks — it collected and bound together actual samples of deadly arsenic-laden, …

HBO’s ‘Fahrenheit 451’ Adaptation Is Burning Books

Book Culture

Did you know HBO is adapting Ray Bradbury’s infamous 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451? If you didn’t know, now you do, and if you did, that’s cool. Turns out, to make the adaptation, the production team had to burn some books. Several hundred, actually.   “Sadly, we had to burn several hundred books,” said Ramin Bahrani, writer, director, and executive producer of the made-for-TV film. “They were real books; there was no way around [burning them]. We had to do it for the film.”   Bahrani, an Iranian-American, put a lot of thought into the scenes where Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon …

Thanks to Pew Research, we know that the average American adult reads twelve books a year. That’s pretty unideal, but the statistics get worse: almost a quarter of adults won’t read a book at all this year. But they must know of books, right?   This past Thursday, Jimmy Kimmel sent his people to the street to ask people to “name a book.” Seriously. But many people couldn’t even name a book! Watch for yourself, but be warned, it’s hard to swallow.        Via Imgur     Featured Image Via  Fortune.

Finland is a haven for both book readers and library lovers: while many countries are downsizing their public library systems, Finland is adding more infrastructure which will not only allow its citizens to enjoy the pleasantries of libraries, but create a new space for its public to meet and socialize.   Nasima Razmyar arrived in Finland in 1992 as part of a refugee family fleeing Afghanistan. At the time, she was unable to speak the language and found difficulty getting around, but was shocked and pleased …

‘IT: Chapter Two’ Finally Finds Its Eddie and Stanley

Book Culture

It was the breakout movie of 2017, and IT: Chapter Two should be no different, considering it’s one of the most anticipated movies coming up, especially with the cast they’re pulling together. Chapter One brought to life the first half of Stephen King’s terrifying novel, following a group of children terrorized by Pennywise the Clown. Chapter Two will take on the second half of the novel, with the now-grown children returning to their hometown to face Pennywise for a second time.   Jessica Chastain’s casting has been called a dream come true, but the rest of the cast is still up in the air. Two …
