When it comes to the best tragic love stories, Wuthering Heights usually takes the cake. Emily Brontë’s novel about the doomed love between the brooding Heathcliff and fierce Catherine is a rollercoaster of a novel you can’t put down.

I mean, this book has it all: atmospheric scenery, ghosts, obsessive revenge, two families locked in an intergenerational feud, a man who digs up his dead lover’s grave… literally everything. It’s like a 19th century Twitter feud that’s a mess, and yet it’s too good to walk away from.

 

I can shamelessly say I adore this book. I feel the need to read it every Valentine’s Day. While Heathcliff and Cathy’s relationship is extremely toxic, the quotes about their passion for each other are so beautifully written by Brontë. It’s one of those stories that sticks with you well after you’ve read the final page.

So please, don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day by taking a note from Heathcliff and digging up your dead lover’s grave. Obsessing about revenge for the rest of your life isn’t a good look either.
