The United Nations is naming a new honorary ambassador: Wonder Woman! Comic Book Resources announced that there will be a ceremony in honor of the award in New York, October 21st. Women who have played Wonder Woman in films will be attending the event, including first woman to wield the lasso of truth, Lynda Carter.
The event coincides with an even bigger project. The United Nations is launching Sustainable Development Goal #5 which will “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” The act will specifically attempt to “provide women and girls with equal access to education, healthcare, decent work, and representation.”
October 21st also marks the anniversary of Wonder Woman’s 75 year career! The US Postal Service is also taking note of this day by releasing four Wonder Woman Stamps. Chief information officer of the Service, Kristin Seaver, made these remarks, “We salute this heroic role model and her legacy that is sure to continue to span another 75 years.”
Making Wonder Woman an honorary ambassador creates a hero for women to rally around. Sometimes all somebody needs to overcome the challenges of life is the proper role model. Wonder Woman reminds us all that women are strong!
