With “Teach This Poem,” the American Academy of Poets Brings Poetry Into Classrooms

The Academy of American Poets, an organization dedicated to promoting poetry in the U.S., is stepping up its efforts towards educating young readers. They’re launching a new program called “Teach This Poem,” which will provide weekly poetry and resources for teachers across the country.

Teach This Poem was inspired by the Academy’s successful Poem-a-Day program, which sends a new poem every day to email subscribers. The Teach This Poem program features less poetry – educators will receive just one poem per week – but each poem will be “accompanied by interdisciplinary resources and activities designed to help teachers quickly and easily bring poetry into the classroom,” according to the Academy’s website.

The program targets students in grades K-12, and the materials promise to be of a very high quality: Teach This Poem is curated by the Academy’s Educator in Residence, Dr. Madeleine Fuchs Holzer, who holds an Ed.D from Columbia University and is known for her writing and work on education.

The new program was launched today, and teachers can sign up on the Academy’s website to get started. Teach This Poem is completely free, so there’s no excuse for not bringing some poetry into your classroom!
