Before baby Yoda dominated Twitter and Disney merch, the world’s first obsession was Groot (or in my case baby Groot). Baby Groot will always have my heart, every time he says “I am Groot” my heart melts. However, when it comes to understanding him…I’m as savvy Captain America in Infinity War. I know I’m not the only one, in fact quite the opposite. Aside from Rocket, who seems to understand Groot with ease (lucky), his fellow teammates take a longer time. So let’s dive into this mystery and hopefully by the time phase four begins, we’ll be more fluent in the language of Groot.
Let’s start with what we know: he says three words, those three words are “I am Groot” and they mean something different each time. As I said earlier Captain America had a tricky time understanding him and Star-Lord too; both thinking the cute creature is just stating his name. However, by Infinity War everyone is able to understand him. Seriously was there a class I missed? Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn said
Someone will only be able to understand Groot by spending time with him. He explained that it is not possible to learn the language of Groot the same way one could study most languages. Instead, someone must connect with Groot on a deeper level.
Given the fact that the rest of the team could understand him in Avengers: Infinity War, (which means the team was with Groot for four years), we know it takes about four years (give or take) to understand him. Knowing this only makes Thor’s language skills more impressive. According to Gunn, the elective on Asgard comment was only joke (so I can’t minor in it?) and Thor’s ability to pickup Groot’s language so quickly can be due to his god-like nature. So basically he’s just that awesome.
Let’s look out for Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and who knows maybe even in Thor: Love and Thunder. In the words of Groot: “I am Groot!” (Happy reading!).
