When romance novels are mentioned, people often think of some cheesy love story about a couple who have tons of steamy moments and live happily ever after in the end. And that’s not too far from the truth. This genre is known for painting pictures that’s unlike reality. Yet, it’s a billion dollar industry according to the Medium. But regardless of their accuracy, romance novels are a fun time if well written. Especially if you’re a reader of various genres, they can give a breath of fresh air.

At least, that’s what they do for me! I can only handle so much thriller novels about murder mysteries. Here’s 5 reasons why romance novels are worth a shot, if you aren’t sold on them just yet.

1. It can be applied to real life, kind of

No matter what the fictional couple is going through, you know they’re going to have a happy ending. And as a reader, it feels great. Their happily ever after proves that genuine love, despite some problems along the way, always wins. And if it doesn’t, then it wasn’t meant to be!

2. It’s a feel-good

Everything is just flawlessly perfect. The characters are beautiful, smart, and clearly have the hots for each other. There’s not much to it because the main goal is to have these characters end up together. That’s it. You just have to be the fly on the wall who watches it all unfold.

3. It can be a fast read

Since they usually only have one conflict, you can finish a romance novel pretty damn quickly. What’s even better is that if the conflict is really good, you just can’t stop until you figure out how it turns out. The writing is also easy to follow when all the characters think about is one another.

4. You can experience the uncommon

As nice as it sounds, someone running to catch us before we board an airplane to leave forever is not exactly something that happens a lot in real life. But as a reader, you’re *basically* the one they’re chasing after. It’s nice, plus pretty cute when the writer sets up a great scene. Ah, one can dream.

5. It helps you grow as a person

In lots of ways, too. You understand how to love someone the way they want to be loved, how to communicate in a healthy manner, and just how to be human. You also learn how to maintain a mature relationship full of love. Maybe also how to be a little over-the-top with romantic gestures, if your partner’s into that.
