*Minor spoilers ahead*
Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why has resonated with teens and adults around the world. Millions of people binge-watched the TV adaptation on Netflix last month. Many were uncertain if there would, should, or could be a second season of the wildly popular show since the first season ended where the book ended. However, if the Game of Thrones adaptation has taught us anything, it’s that the show can go on even if a book does not exist.
Season 1 of 13 Reasons Why followed Clay Jensen as he listens to thirteen tapes from Hannah Baker that she made just before committing suicide. Each cassette gives one reason why she decided to end her life. It’s a tragic look at teenage bullying and the hardships we all face. Many people weren’t sure how the show would continue since Hannah’s story seemed to be over, raising speculation about whether a second season should even be made. However, Selena Gomez, an executive producer of the show, announced on social media that Season 2 is confirmed.
In an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, creator and showrunner Brian Yorkey answered a few of our most burning questions about Season 2. Although most of the upcoming show remains a mystery, according to Yorkey, Hannah’s story is not over and she will “absolutely” be in Season 2! There is so much more in store for the rest of the characters as well.
I knew by the time we finished season 1 that I wanted to continue. We really have characters who, after 13 episodes, are just beginning the process of recovery and the process of coming to terms with what part they might’ve played in Hannah’s death and how Hannah’s death will change their lives going forward. I think that there is so much that’s fascinating about the way we grieve, the way we recover, the way we learn to take better care of each other.
Yorkey commented on possible consequences for Bryce: “…Jessica is just beginning the process of recovery from her rape, and we have a rapist who has not in any way been brought to justice.” It’s safe to say that viewers felt unsettled by the lack of justice brought for Jessica or Hannah.
While it seems that not all of the very many cliffhangers we were left with at the end of Season 1 will be completely answered, Yorkey reassured that many stories will be explored.
All the cliffhangers that we saw at the end of season 1 go back to the initial set of traumas that we’re talking about — go back to bullying, go back to Jessica’s rape, to Hannah’s rape. They’re all related, so I would very much like to explore where they all go and to see if there is, as I think there will be, some light for these kids. We’re going to continue to tell their stories really honestly. We’re going to answer all of the burning questions that people have about [the show]. Is Tyler going to do something? What’s going to happen to Alex? Will Bryce be brought to justice? We’re going to answer those questions but I think, even more, we’re going to continue to look very truthfully and very honestly at what they go through, even when it’s painful at times.
We were initially skeptical of a Season 2, but now, WE CANNOT WAIT! Read the full interview here.
