During March Madness this weekend, HBO treated viewers to something we’ve been waiting far too long for: new Game of Thrones footage. The new teaser trailer is short, but its packed with ominous scenes and dialogue – as well as plenty of fodder for fan theories.
In the trailer, we hear multiple characters give creepy warnings. “Are you afraid?” Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) asks. “You Should be.” Later in the trailer, we hear Faceless Man Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) predict that “a face will be added to the hall,” a reference to the House of Black and White, where the faces of the dead appear.
The visuals are no less forboding. We see Daenerys in the hands of the Dothraki, Ramsey on the battlefield, and Bran Stark encountering the Night King, among other things. There are a lot of disconnected images here – perfect for super-fans to break down shot by shot.
And those super-fans are already at it. (Warning: minor book spoilers and some fan theory discussion follow.) According to the Los Angeles Times, some fans believe that this trailer shows footage of a battle at the Tower of Joy. That’s an old battle that’s discussed (but not seen) in the book. It was at the Tower of Joy that Lyanna Stark died, so fans are in a frenzy about a potential confirmation of the so-called R + L = J theory. The theory claims that Jon Snow is actually the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, and it is one of the most popular of the many Game of Thrones fan theories.
For now, all this is just speculation – and it will stay that way until April 24, when Game of Thrones’ sixth season debuts on HBO.
