Candy lovers rejoice, Broadway is bringing us a very special treat this upcoming year. Starring two-time tony winning Christian Borle as the candy man himself, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will be a play on London musical that debuted at the West End in 2013. As you may have heard, the musical is a creative collaboration between director Jack O’Brien, Marc Shainman and Scott Wittman. But now…we’ve got the teasers.
In an exclusive interview with People Magazine, O’Brien spoke excitedly about the project and sang his praises for his fellow co-creators:
“It’s pure pleasure to watch them spin their magic over characters like Charlie Bucket, Willy Wonka, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee to create a range of new music for the Broadway production as well as meshing their great gifts alongside some of the beloved classics from the film.”
Bringing book, film, and musical features from prior adaptions together for the Broadway stage, the show is shaping up to be the iconic Dahl story with a thrilling new twist. The musical will pull several songs from the movies, including “Pure Imagination” and “The Candy Man”as well as inventive new measures to approach the more challenging components of the fantasy-driven feature. Most notably, pupeteer Basil Twist has been brought on board and is scheming some creative alternatives to Dahl’s Oompa Looma’s.
How will the team manage other stage dilemmas like the impetuous Violet Beauregarde inflating into a giant blueberry or Mike Teavee shrinking to TV screen size? We’ll find out April 23rd when the musical officially opens at the Lunt-Fontanne!
