The only way to make a Disney cult classic even more classic and more culty is by tossing Lin-Manuel Miranda into the ring. With Alan Menken on piano, the duo gives us their rendition of “Under the Sea”, “Kiss the Girl” and other nostalgic songs all in tow with much giggling and the theatrics only natural to the playwright and composer.
Check out the pair practicing in a snip for Digital #Ham4Ham.
On the live-action project, Deadline shared:
“This one is being orchestrated as a mix of pre-existing songs from the 1989 Disney animated classic movie, for which Menken won two Oscars, sharing Best Song with Howard Ashman, and winning Best Score on his own. Menken has eight Oscars in his storied career. While Miranda has become all the rage since his record breaking Broadway show Hamilton became the hottest ticket and won 11 Tony Awards, he has a soft spot for The Little Mermaid, even naming his newborn son Sebastian, after the crab in the musical.”
Miranda has also shared a not-so-secret soft spot for The Little Mermaid. As many fans probably know, his son’s name is Sebastian, and the connection to a beloved crab is no coincidence. The Miranda-Menken duo is still teasing out the major details, including what writers they’ll take on board, project supervision, and Miranda’s involvement. In addition to The Little Mermaid, Disney is serving up several other noteworthy live adaptions, including Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, and Red Rose.
Looks like it’s time to take out your ancient VHS tapes and musical cassettes! Stay tuned for more live-adaption news to come.
