The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, a prestigious literary award given to English-language women and non-binary writers, announced this year’s winner. V.V. Ganeshananthan, author of Brotherless Night, was awarded $150,000 for her well-earned win.

Brotherless Night

The stunning novel follows aspiring doctor Sashi, whose life is turned upside down when she and her family are thrown into the conflict brewing between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers. An exploration of politics, morality, love, and loss, Brotherless Night has been praised for its illustrious characters, powerful accounts of history, and striking illustrations of truth.

Along with the $150,000 prize, V. V. Ganeshananthan is gifted a residency at the Fogo Island Inn, located off the picturesque coast of Newfoundland.

Shortlisted Titles

Shortlisted for the same prize were Eleanor Catton’s Birnam Wood, Claudia Dey’s Daughter, Kim Coleman Foote’s Coleman Hill, and Janika Oz’s A History of Burning. Each of the shortlisted authors received $12,500.
