Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles is coming to Netflix! The streaming giant recently ordered for an animated series to be produced based upon the popular comic book Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai.

Set during the Edo period of Japan, Usagi Yojimbo tells the tale of a rabbit (Miyamoto Usagi) as he takes on adventures and becomes a bodyguard for those he meets along the way. The series lends homage to Japanese folklore and history.

Sakai spoke of the inspiration the culture brought to the comics.

I enjoy writing and drawing the Usagi stories. He is an interesting character in an intriguing world. True, it is a fantasy series but it is grounded in an actual time and place. Japan has a rich culture, tradition of folklore, and an interesting history. I pull my stories from all these sources as well as my own imagination.

Conversely, the Netflix adaptation will feature Yuichi, a descendent of Usagi, as he aims to live up to his ancestors in a future setting. Produced by James Wan, it will be the first time Usagi steals the spotlight for himself. Previously, Usagi appeared in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television series and even his own three-minute pilot, Space Usagi, was released. Unfortunately, a full series was never created.

Sakai explained that he wishes to feature other characters in the Usagi Yojimbo universe.

Usagi has already met up with the TMNT, though with a different iteration of the characters he had encountered before. I would like to explore that again. And maybe do crossovers with other characters.

Cowabunga! Perhaps we’ll be introduced to some unexpected guests in Samurai Rabbit? A release date is yet to be decided, but be on the lookout!
