Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Turns Out Basketball Legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Is a Bestselling Sherlock Holmes Author

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is best known for his legendary basketball career, but did you know he is also a passionate writer? Turns out Abdul-Jabbar has written thirteen books, the newest of which is a graphic novel called Mycroft Holmes and the Apocalypse Handbook. He chose to develop Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of our favorite Sherlock Holmes, as he was a huge fan of the Arthur Conan Doyle’s series when he was a kid. Abdul-Jabbar’s series has become a bestselling phenomenon across the globe.

BookRiot sat down to talk with Abdul-Jabbar about his new book. Regarding his development of Mycroft, Abdul-Jabbar says:

I wanted him to be the opposite of what’s implied about him in the stories, that he’s a brilliant but bloated, officious bureaucrat. Remember, it’s Sherlock who describes him and Sherlock is not always a reliable source. He has his moments of pettiness. Most important, I wanted the opposite of Sherlock’s social personality. Like Sherlock, Mycroft is damaged in the ways that only people of such towering intellect can be, but he handles it by engaging in gambling, women, and indulging himself. Most important, he’s got a great sense of humor. I hope we’ll keep writing about him because I enjoy his company so much.

Be sure to check out his book signing coming up on September 28th. Here are the details of the event!
