Top 5 Most Infamous Fanfictions Ever Written

If there is one thing we can be sure about fanfiction, is that you can find fanfiction about EVERYTHING.

Book Culture Just For Fun

If there is one thing we can be sure about fanfiction, is that you can find fanfiction about EVERYTHING. Every single fictional character—and sometimes even real people—has a fanfiction to their name. Really, anything you can think of, and it can be a thing of dreams. A chance to revisit your favorite characters going on new adventures or doing the most mundane things like working together in a coffee shop. But fanfiction can also be made from the same stuff that nightmares are made out of. Incredibly inappropriate, sometimes way out of line, or just plain weird.

Here are five of the most cursed fanfictions that became so famous (or infamous) because of how badly written they were, the horrible themes they dealt with, or because of the drama behind them.

My Immortal.

We’ve talked about this one maybe a thousand times, but it’s so infamous it still deserves to be on this list. If you still somehow unfamiliar with this mess of a story, it’s loosely based on Harry Potter, published between 2006 and 2007 on Fanfiction.net, and it is considered by many the worst fanfiction EVER WRITTEN. It was full of plot-holes and continuity errors, grammar and spelling mistakes, canon characters that acted very out of character, and very crude and explicit sexual content.

But this was not the worst of all. Because of the enormous amount of bad comments and reviews, the author (XXXbloodyrists666XXX) began to say that if they didn’t get a certain amount of positive comments they would not continue to update the story. It was said later the author of this fanfic never even read Harry Potter, though this is yet to be confirmed.

The author behind this cultural reset of a fanfiction is debated to this day, and even when some people have claimed to be the authors or co-authors of this work, nothing has been confirmed. We don’t even know if this was written with the intent to be serious, or in an effort to satirize fanfiction as a whole.

In short, My Immortal was a whole mess.

Salivation (maybe Salvation?)

This one was another one is another controversial one. It is based on Spongebob Squarepants, yes, that Spongebob Squarepants, but if anything is more of a racist and homophobic rant from the author than an actual fanfiction. There is very little “story,” which is in itself a racist and homophobic mess, and many, many author’s notes with much of the same content.

This fanfic got the author banned from the Fanfiction.net website (where it was originally posted) because of the horrible themes of the story, and it was (thankfully) the last we heard of them.

Hogwarts School of Prayer and Miracles

There just is an insurmountable amount of Harry Potter and Harry Potter-inspired fanfiction. So you just know there are going to be a lot of bad ones.

This one though is maybe the exact opposite of what My Immortal was. While My Immortal was some gothic, straight out of early 2000s punk rock music video, Hogwarts School of Prayer and Miracles was basically a Christian retelling of the series. And this one, unlike the last two others, it’s still available to read on Fanfiction.net

This work by proudhousewife was extensively criticized not only for the more than mediocre writing, but also for the incredibly out-of-character characters, dismissal and degradation of the canon, and the preachy and propaganda-y nature of it.

Masters of the Universe

You’ve probably heard of this one. If you haven’t, then you’ve most likely heard of the novelization of it 50 Shades of Grey. It is common knowledge that the world-wide phenomenon started as a Twilight fanfic on, you guessed it, Fanfiction.net.

The now New York Times Bestselling author E. L. James wrote this fanfic as Snowqueens Icedragon. This one didn’t necessarily become popular because it was bad. It had a lot of hardcore fans and over 56,000 reviews by the time it got deleted in 2011 when it started to get a lot of attention from big publishing houses. It was only after it was published as an “original series” that people started calling out the problematic content of the books such as the very toxic and abusive behavior displayed by Christian Grey/Edward Cullen.

Cupcakes

This one is on many “worst fanfics ever” round-ups and for good reason. On this My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fanfic, Pinkie Pie tortures Rainbow Dash to get her special cupcakes ingredient, which turns out to be pony parts. Yes, someone went online to write a gory fanfiction about a cartoon made for children. Out of all the things to write about.

This fanfiction is attributed to Sergeant Sprinkles, though who is the real writer of this remains unknown. This fanfic is very well known in the “Bronie” community and it’s often talked about in their forums. A lot of fan art and YouTube remixes have been made about it, and people have even written a lot of alternative endings. A graphic novelization of it also exists, which really just makes you question a lot of things.

Cupcakes is so notorious that Equestria Daily deleted its post about it, though you can probably still find it out there. Not that I recommend looking for it in the first place.

Conclusion: nothing is sacred.
