We finally know who will take the stage in the new Harry Potter play in London! The organizers of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child have cast three actors in the lead roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
Paul Thornley will play Ron Weasley and Noma Dumezweni will play Hermione Granger. The role of Harry Potter will be played by Jamie Parker. Of course, all of the actors are middle-aged adults, because the new story takes place nearly 20 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.
But it’s not just the actors’ ages that will give this new chapter a new look: the casting of Noma Dumezweni as Hermione has caused quite a stir. Dumezweni is a black woman born in Swaziland to South African parents, and the casting choice means that the play will be the first time that Hermione is represented as a woman of color in an official Harry Potter release. Some fans, unfortunately, didn’t take that so well. J.K. Rowling wasted no time in firing back at the haters on Twitter:
The play will debut in July of 2016. It’s a sequel (not a prequel!) to the original Harry Potter series. The events of the play take place 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts.
