Dave Hemingway! Congratulations you old chap, you’ve got hair whiter than the Snows of Kilimanjaro and a silvery beard that casts a shadow over all others. However, the real treat of this year’s winner is that, like the emblem of their mimicry, Dave shares the same last name as Earnest. From looks to last name, the similarity can only mean the win was a destined literary-turned-life twist of fate. Dave, however, maintains that there is no familial relation between him and his famed doppelganger.

The event, running on 36 years now, is set in Sloppy Joe’s bar, a frequented spot of the iconic author. It attracts a lot of attention too – some 140 plus applicants this year alone, including husband to Paula Dean, Michael Groover. Although Groover’s look couldn’t quite topple Dave’s, he was able to nab a place in the top five for the second year in a row.
Trumping Groover and all the other Hemingways, Dave credits the win to more than just his lush beard and white locks. He attributes his win to his wool turtleneck; a near replica of one the author donned back in his day. In addition to looks, Dave also plays the part pretty well: he enjoys fishing, women, and plenty of drinking. “I like having a good time,” Dave tells the Sun Sentinel. “I do feel like Ernest because I’m in the town he lived in so many years.”
