Anne Griffin’s debut novel When All Is Said launched last night at the Gutter Bookshop in Dublin’s city centre, and despite only being on sale for half a week, Griffin’s novel is debuting at #1 in the Irish bestseller charts, having garnered praise in advance of its release from the likes of talkshow host Graham Norton, and PS: I Love You author and Samantha Who? writer Cecelia Ahern, among others!

Published by Scepter, When All Is Said follows eighty-four-year-old Maurice Hannigan, as he sits in a bar, and has five drinks, each a toast to someone who was important in his life. The narrative, told in the first person and addressing Maurice’s son Kevin, who lives abroad, is tied together by a secret Maurice kept all his life.
Described by The Boy in the Striped Pajamas author John Boyne as ‘an extraordinary novel…and a story that moved me to tears,’ the book has been garnering extraordinarily high levels of praise for a debut writer, with positive reviews appearing in both national and international publications including The Irish Times and The Guardian, and an American publication date set for March 5th.

Boyne, a long time friend of Griffin, launched the book last night, taking to the stage following Jim Binchy of Hachette Ireland, of which Sceptre is a division, in front of a packed-out store, and lauded Griffin for her ‘compassion’ and ‘interest in human nature,’ and her ambition not just to be published but ‘to write a novel worthy of being published.’ He noted that ‘perhaps our greatest living writer,’ John Banville, called the book ‘a rare jewel,’ and joked that though Robbie Williams may never have conquered America, Anne Griffin certainly will.
Griffin opened her speech by thanking Bob Johnson, prop of the beautiful independent bookshop The Gutter Bookshop for the place he and his store hold in Irish society, and went on to thank her agent, for taking a chance on her after she had been rejected no less than thirty-seven times.
Next for Anne Griffin is a second novel which is nearly finished, and a slew of foreign publications: When All Is Said will be released by Thomas Dunne Books in the US and Canada on the 5th March, 2019, by Rowohlt Verlag in Germany, Delcourt in France, by Harper Collins Holland in the Netherlands, by Wydawnictwo Czarna in Poland, and by Tyto Alba in Lithuania.
