The Sweetness of Water tells the story of Prentiss and Landry, two brothers recently freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, and their efforts to reunite their family that was pulled apart by slavery. They find work with the Walker family, and an unlikely friendship commences. Amongst the tale of family and friendship is a tragic love story and an unexpected death that paralyzes the town. As this story takes place just after The Civil War, this is the perfect pick to celebrate the commencement of Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

If you’re not familiar with Oprah’s Book Club, chances are you probably live under a rock without internet or television connection. Oprah began her book club in 1996, beginning with The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard. The club was relaunched in 2012 as Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 so that viewers could continue to read together past the end of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2011.  Since then, Oprah’s Book Club has thrived and has unarguably even inspired the beginnings of other famous book clubs.

Oprah’s Book Club is reading this pick from now until mid-July, so there is still plenty of time to pick up your copy of The Sweetness of Water and join the club!
