CBS All Access is set to debut their limited series based on The Stand by Stephen King on December 17, 2020. Starring actors such as Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgård, James Marsden and more, the show will stay true to the original source material, taking place in a world where a weaponized strain of the flu wiped out 99% of all mankind, leaving only a couple million people left in the continental United States to take sides in a coming war between good and evil, one that will determine the fate of the entire human species.
CBS All Access announced today that its highly anticipated adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most famous works is to premiere this December, revealing the show’s length in the process. The series will consist of only nine episodes, which, in my personal opinion, is far too short to tell the entire 82-page-long tale of Randall Flagg, Mother Abigail and the various characters they recruit for their, for lack of a better descriptor, “holy war”. Regardless, we now have both a premiere date to look forward to as well as a set number of episodes to expect.
Shwrunner Benjamin Cavell said in a statement:
During the two years we spent making The Stand, we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant. We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades. We’re so proud of this show and its attempt to find meaning and hope in the most uncertain of times. We can’t wait to share it with the world.
