The Marvel Universe Continues in ‘Eternals’

If you thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe is winding down now that the Avengers movies are concluded, you are sorely mistaken.

If you thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe is winding down now that the Avengers movies are concluded, you are sorely mistaken. In theaters in November, Eternals introduces an entirely new set of characters who are pivotal to the fictional universe but have been entirely silent in all of the other Marvel films.

But as yesterday’s teaser trailer indicates, Eternals will not be a silent film. Towards the end of the trailer, one of the characters says these words: “Throughout the years we have never interfered, until now.”

Who are these eternals, exactly? They were created by celestial deities as a sort of alternate human experiments that Marvel says can survive even the scattering of all their molecules, since within them is immense energy. They are extremely powerful beings who may even surpass the prowess of Captain Marvel.

Below is a list of the 10 eternals to appear in the upcoming films. You are not mistaken if you recognize many of the names from ancient mythology!

  1. Thena (played by Angelina Jolie)
  2. Ikaris (Richard Madden)
  3. Sersi (Gemma Chan)
  4. Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-Seok)
  5. Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry)
  6. Druig (Barry Keoghan)
  7. Ajak (Salma Hayek)
  8. Makkari (Lauren Ridloff)
  9. Sprite (Lia McHugh)
  10. Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani)

As the trailer suggests, the eternals helped early humans innovate but did not interfere once they grew independent and strong. But someone (or something) who is presumably the antagonist of the film forces them to begin a hands-on approach to world conflicts. Or perhaps it is a conflict that is outside the world? We’ll have to wait until November 5th to see.
