We’ve all been waiting for an official release date and it has finally been revealed. The movie adaptation for New York Times young adult best-seller The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas will be released on October 19th of this year.

The film, starring Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games, Everything Everything), will come out the same day as Mowgli and Halloween. The Hate U Give, which has been popular since its debut, follows Starr Carter, a sixteen-year-old girl who feels as though she leads two lives. She lives in a mostly black neighborhood and attends a school that is mostly white. She makes to bold decision to become an activist after her friend gets killed by policemen. It tackles contemporary issues like racism, classism, and identity. The themes brought up in the book are conflicts people of all ages might have to deal with and it is no wonder why so many, regardless of age, have picked up this book.

Stenberg is well known for her portrayal of Rue in The Hunger Games, her strong presence in social media, and as an activist. If you didn’t know, The Hate U Give was inspired by the BLM movement, so I think being an actual IRL activist makes her a great fit and she will definitely rock this role, for sure.
I highly recommend reading The Hate U Give before its film release in October.
