Despite there being six books within the Dune series written by Frank Herbert, director Denis Villeneuve has decided he will make no more than three feature films based on the books. Dune Part 2 is set to release in March 2024 following the success of the first movie. Having grossed over $400 million at the box office, a sequel was inevitable. However, Villeneuve has no plans to make more than three now.

Three Installments Only

Villeneuve has intentions of making a third installment based on the second book, Dune Messiah. Warner Bros. has not confirmed production yet, but Villeneuve plans on making a third and final film. He states that the screenplay for Dune Messiah is actually being written.

Villeneuve speaks about it and says:

The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished. It will take a little time… There’s a dream of making a third movie… It would make absolute sense to me.”

Cast Opinions

Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet, who stars in the first and second movies, are also on board with the idea of making a third Dune movie.

Chalamet responds:

If the time and opportunity comes to complete the story with Messiah, I think we’re all super enthusiastic about that.”

It’s Going to Take Time

However, Denis Villeneuve is in no rush to make the third movie. He devoted the last 6 years to creating the first two Dune movies and might need a palette cleanser before diving into a third film.

On making the third movie, Villeneuve said in a statement:

I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis. I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity I might do something in between.”

It’s still exciting to be getting a third installment of the Dune series. Some fans may keep wanting more, but Villeneuve is set on not surpassing three films. For those who want to know what happens to Paul Atreides after the first Dune book, they can always keep reading on through the six-book series. For now, we can still enjoy what we have and watch the upcoming Dune sequel releasing on March 1, 2024!
