Universal Pictures dropped the official trailer for the film adaption of the Tony award-winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen. The story follows Evan Hansen, an anxious and socially awkward teen, who finds himself in a web of lies when a mix-up makes it appear that he is the only friend of a fellow classmate who commits suicide. But as Hansen gains popularity, he questions whether it is right to continue the facade if it means lying to everyone he cares about.

Fans of the musical have been waiting for this moment since Universal acquired the rights to the film in the fall of 2018. However, the pandemic pushed production back, leaving fans anxious for any news regarding the film’s release. Today, we have our first glimpse of the film set to premiere on September 24, 2021.

The film stars original Broadway cast member, Ben Platt, alongside stars Amy Adams (The Woman in the Window), Julianne Moore (The Woman in the Window), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), and Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give). We can only hope that Platt’s performance as Evan Hansen is just as memorable and heart-wrenching as his Broadway performance that won him a Tony award in 2017. In fact, having won a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy for his performance in the musical, there is speculation that Platt is well on his way to receive an Oscar nomination for his performance in the upcoming film. Will Ben Platt become an EGOT at the next Academy Awards ceremony? We’ll have to wait and see!

Not only does this film have a star-studded cast, but it is also directed by Stephen Chbosky, the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The film also snagged Steven Levenson, the original writer of the musical’s book.
