The Cursed Child has already broken four records since its publication. It is officially the bestselling book of 2016. The fourth fastest selling title of all time. The best opening week for a single book, ahead of Fifty Shades of Grey. The bestselling play script since the penguin edition of Romeo and Juliet, and since records began.
The only records Rowling can’t seem to break, are her own. The last three books of the Harry Potter series all sold more than 1 million copies in their opening weeks.
The Cursed Child also raked in more money than the whole of the Drama, Texts, Plays, and Screenplays category managed to aquire in the whole year of 2015.
On the books runaway success, David Shelley, CEO of Little Brown has said:
“We’re all so pleased and proud that the script book of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has officially sold almost 850,000 copies in the UK alone in its first week, making it the fastest-selling book for almost a decade, and the fastest-selling play script of all time. This is way beyond our most optimistic expectations and is testament to the passion readers have for J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, as well as to the amazing reception the play itself has had. We’ve also been blown away by the terrific support, creativity and enthusiasm we’ve seen from all our retailers across the UK and in our territories around the world– they have been the most amazing partners.”
Rowling doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, with two Fantastic Beasts titles in the works. No where to go but up!
