I read The Circle by Dave Eggers. I became obsessed with the sci-fi novel about halfway through, and have been recommending it to everyone. My latest recommendation, “Read The Circle before you watch the movie.” That’s pretty much everyone’s suggestion- to read the book before watching its adaptation. After viewing the most recent trailer for The Circle, starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega, Karen Gillan and Patton Oswald (excellent cast, in my opinion), my feelings are even stronger: PLEASE READ THE BOOK FIRST! It’s hard to tell, but the trailer didn’t make me feel like the adaption will be so good. Hopefully I am wrong.
I caution you to not even watch the trailer. In typical trailer fashion, so much of the plot is given away. As someone who’s read the book, these plot points are obvious. What else is obvious? That some major elements have been changed. I won’t go into either.
Despite everything I’m saying, I’m super excited for this adaptation. Admittedly, I am one of those readers who loves watching books come to life. I am also that reader who never likes the movie (there are perhaps a handful exceptions, but not many).
Ok, I have warned you. Now do what you want and watch the trailer, or not. What ever you decide, tell us what you think!
