Disney’s 1992 Aladdin is getting the live action treatment. Will Smith is playing the Genie (previously voiced by Robin Williams…obviously). Smith celebrated the beginning of shooting with a picture of the principle cast. Check it out here!

This live action remake puts a new spin on the 1992 cartoon. The 1992 cartoon was itself a reimagining of a tale in One Thousand and One Nights. Though the folk tale wasn’t originally a part of the One Thousand and One Nights, it’s still a classic. It actually isn’t even Arabic. It was written by Antoine Galland, who is a French guy. One of the wildest differences between the original folk tale and the 1992 movie is that it’s originally set in China. So the original ‘Aladdin’ was set in China, written by a Frenchman, and is probably the most famous story in a classic Arabic collection.
Disney’s been on a bit of a live-action-remake kick with Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and this year’s Beauty and the Beast. The new Aladdin will be directed by Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes). The release date is yet to be announced.
