The Bookstore Blues

One often enters a bookstore on a mission and most likely that mission involves books. If you’re like me and can spend hours in bookstores looking around, then you know the feeling of wanting to figure out which is the best pick for you – because there are many. It seems that books have gotten more expensive as time has gone on. I used to be able to buy more than one book at a time, but nowadays it’s either books or save money to go out to eat. Maybe even get a new pair of shoes? Books are expensive! But that doesn’t stop me from browsing and even buying.

To us readers, the bookstore is a sacred place. It is a guilty pleasure to be stuck in a bookstore. On the one hand you are surrounded by thousands of lovely titles and stories, on the other, you’re stuck in a pricey palace. I am ashamed to say this, but I spent $30 on a book yesterday. Yes! I know, stop. Please. It killed me inside. To be fair, the book is over 500 pages, so I will be reading it for a while.

When you walk into a bookstore, it’s like you have an angel and a devil on your shoulders. The angel says, “Just look around, browse a bit, you can always come back.” The devil rolls his eyes and says, “Buy them all! Muahahah!”

Sometimes, it’s like the book talks to you too! They’re all like, “Pick me, pick me, pick me!” Finally, you’re sweating, breathing heavy, and have 5 books in your arms, so you have to park yourself in a corner, do some soul-searching, and choose. There’s no way you’re spending over $100 on books today, no sir. But out of the corner of your eye you see people all around with 10 books stacked in their arms, heading to the register. Not fair.

One day. One day we will return and buy all of the books to fill our homes with. Even if they won’t get read in this decade, we will get them. We will get them and we will love them. Until then, we have to choose one book.
