The Bestselling Books by State 1996-2016

You may think you know the most popular book in your state, but we’re guessing you’re wrong. Why? Because, based on Amazon’s list of bestselling books per state over the past two decades, the top sellers are shocking! It’s not any Harry Potter book, nor The Bible…

Just take a look at the map we composed below and find the theme:

You may notice that the controversial Fifty Shades of Grey dominates the map. It’s the bestseller in 38 states. The Hunger Games (Book 1) takes the second place spot, topping the bestseller list in 9 states. Three states stand out for their different most popular books: Minnesota and Nebraska, where Strengthfinder 2.0 is most popular, and Montana, with Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations One School at a Time topping the bestseller list.

Here’s a closer look at the titles which have taken over the U.S. over the past 20 years:

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James takes the cake for 38 states… We all know what this is about.

Suzanne Collins’ first book in the Hunger Games series is the bestselling book in 9 states- all on the west coast! Those states include Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Strengthsfinder 2.0, a guidebook for managers looking to improve employee work and uncover their hidden talents, was the bestselling book in Minnesota and Nebraska. Interesting…

And finally, the most unique state is… Montana!

Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin tells the “astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban’s backyard.”

There you have it: The bestselling books (on Amazon), by state. Surprised? Us too…
