Canadian indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara have announced via social media that they are releasing memoir titled High School on September 24th, 2019.
Tegan and Sara published a post on Instagram with a photo from their adolescence featuring the pair sitting in the car. The caption reads: “High School, a memoir by Tegan and Sara, to be published Fall 2019. A transcendent story of first and first songs, it tangles itself up in the parallel and discordant memories of two sisters growing up down the hall from one another.”

“‘How did you start your band? When did you know that you were gay? What were you like before Tegan and Sara?’ We have spent twenty years answering those complicated questions with simple answers,” the singers said in a joint statement. “Writing High School gives us the opportunity to tell the intricate stories that shaped our relationship as sisters, musicians, and queer girls,” the Quin sisters explained.
The chapters will alternate between the sisters, as they recount their childhood growing up in Calgary, Alberta. The book will be “a raw account of the drugs, alcohol, love music, and friendships they explored in their formative years.”
“Anyone who’s paid attention to Tegan and Sara’s lyrics already knows what sensitive and engaging storytellers they are,” MCD publisher Sean McDonald says. “For me, the real thrill of High School is how naturally that translates to the page—what strong and distinct literary voices they have—and that their book is at once urgent and gorgeous, that it fairly demands to be read. The fact that it’s written by world-famous musicians and LGBTQ icons is… well, honestly, that’s exciting too.”
High School will be published by Simon & Schuster in Canada and Virago in the United Kingdom.
The Quin twins will also be headed into the studio to produce their ninth studio album.
