Study Shows Movies and Shows Based on Books Make Way More Money

New research from the Publishers Association has shown that movies based on books make 53% more worldwide than original screenplays. The relationship is reciprocal, as a successful adaptation tends to significantly boost sales for the source material.

Researchers concluded that adaptations benefited from the popularity of already-known books, which also provide a rich universe for the adaptation to work within, as books often include world-building and backstory that don’t translate well to a visual medium.

Literature-based television shows also attracted 56% more viewers than other shows.
