With Hollywood being a predominately white male industry, (NPR, USC) the upcoming adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle‘s classic, A Wrinkle in Time is changing things up. Ava DuVernay (Selma) is set to direct the film and as we mentioned in our other article, A Wrinkle in Time already has an all-star cast for the roles of Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. Now, 13-year-old, Storm Reid, has joined the cast as the lead character, Meg Murray.
“After an extensive search that spanned multiple dimensions, we’re overjoyed to welcome Storm Reid to Wrinkle in Time as our beloved ‘Meg,’”
Reid has starred in such films as Twelve Years A Slave and most recently, American Girl: Lea to the Rescue. This is a game changer for women of color, who are often cast in stereotypical roles. Reid, like Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild, 12 Years A Slave) is a young, black, female actress cast in a lead role of a major motion picture. More diversity in Hollywood is essential and Reid is getting her moment to show what she can do.
A Wrinkle in Time is expected to be released in 2018
