Tom Hanks to the rescue! This award winning actor has brought so much joy to people’s hearts with his performances as an actor, and now he is warming the heart of this North Carolina bookstore. The bookstore, called Foggy Pine Books, has been struggling due to the pandemic.
Due to Covid-19 and the lockdown, a lot of small business suffered last year, some even being forced to close. Foggy Pine Books was one of the small businesses that faced these hard times. The owner of the store, Mary Ruthless, was uncertain if the store would survive through the winter since staying afloat last year was such a struggle. However, in February they started to receive a mega boost in sales.
Stephan Colbert, host of the Late Show with Stephan Colbert, used his platform to support the store during the Super Bowl. Usually the ads that run during the sport event cost millions of dollars, but Colbert took it upon himself to advertise the store, since they couldn’t possibly afford it on their own like other big corporations can. Hanks and actor Sam Elliot were included in the endorsement.
Since then, the store has been outrageously busy and even had to hire more staff to keep up with sales. It’s amazing how well the store is doing, and the fear of surviving through the winter is now over. Fingers crossed other small business bookstores get the same help during these tough times.
Small business bookstores are the heart and soul of book lovers, and it’s heartwarming to see people in the public eye using their voice to help those who have been struggling.
