We’re back with another Bookstagrammer of the Week! Today, we are featuring bookstagrammer @scsreads. Nnenna’s clean, cozy, bright, and colorful aesthetic will liven up your Instagram feed. Check out our interview with her below.
Why did you start your Bookstagram?
I’m pretty sure I discovered Bookstagram through Booktube. Once upon a time, I was on Booktube and when I discovered Bookstagram, I wanted to get involved because it was another space where I could connect with people about books.
Where are you from?
What do you want your Instagram to bring to the world?
If my Instagram encourages people to pick up a certain book or just to read in general, that’s amazing. I’ve been a reader since I was a little kid and I just love chatting about books with people. I hope that people see my Instagram as a safe space in which anyone is welcome to chat books with me. I’ve been on Bookstagram for five-plus years now, and I just want to continue sharing my love of books with the world.
Fun Fact about you:
I used to knit a lot, and I helped run a knitting club when I was in college. I don’t knit as much as I used to, but I made some fun things back in the day, including a few sweaters!
Ahhh, so so many! Some that immediately come to mind are @absorbedinpages, @thestackspod, @lifebytheink, @mentallybooked, @michellreadsbooks, @booklanguage, @readwithneleh, @simonereadsbooks, @theshelf_edit, @parisperusing, @allegedlymari, @lupita.reads, @never_withouta_book, @jeanellnicolereads, @honeybuttergal, @beingabookwyrm, @spinesvines, and @bookswithtay.
But that list is definitely not exhaustive, and I’m sure I’ve accidentally left some people out!
Favorite Books and Authors:
A few favorite books from the last few years:
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert
A few favorite authors:
I think my last fictional crush was Raf from Take a Hint, Dani Brown. A guy that’s sensitive, loves his family, and reads romance? *swoon*
These books are at the top of my TBR at the moment: Raceless by Georgina Lawton, Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert, and The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris (it’s one of my most anticipated 2021 releases, so I’m especially excited for this one).
What’s your special approach to content?
I don’t know if I have a special approach, but I think I do share a good amount of reviews. I like to write at least a mini-review for every book that I read, and then I share most of those on my feed as well.
Aesthetic / Instagram page theme:
I’d say like 99% of the photos on my feed in the last couple of years have been shot in my apartment, so my theme is my home, really. I love a bright and clean aesthetic with a mostly white background, so the books really stand out.
How often do you post?
I like to aim for 5-6 times a week, but it’s usually more like 3-4, lol.
What does your Bookstagram mean to you?
I love Bookstagram, and I’ve connected with so many wonderful people there. It’s a source of joy for me and inspires me to expand my reading horizons.
I’m lucky because NYC has so many great bookstores including The Center for Fiction, McNally Jackson, Greenlight Bookstore, Books are Magic, The Strand, and Housing Works.
Who would you have supply you with a lifetime of books?
I don’t know if I’m allowed to pick multiple publishing houses, but I’d say Riverhead Books for my adult fiction + Berkley for romance + Penguin Teen/Underlined/Epic Reads for YA!
Author to take a selfie with:
The first person that popped into my head is Jasmine Guillory! She just seems so nice and like she would be fun to hang out with.
Favorite book cover:
One of my favorites from last year was Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo. I thought the cover was so beautiful and striking, and I loved the book as well.
Book you have claimed to have read that you didn’t:
Oh, I’m not sure! There are a few books on my shelves that I’ve owned for so long but I don’t remember whether or not I’ve actually read them.
When did you know you had made it as a Bookstagrammer?
Haha, I don’t know if I’ve made it! But I have had some fun opportunities come out of my Bookstagram, which I didn’t expect when I first started it several years ago, so that’s been very cool.
I just watched the trailer for the Shadow and Bone series that’s dropping on Netflix next month and I’m pretty excited because visually, it’s looking a lot like what I pictured in my head when I was reading the books.
Advice for aspiring Bookstagrammers:
If you want to join Bookstagram but you’re nervous about it, I’d say just go for it! I think you’ll find that people on Bookstagram are very warm and welcoming. Also, this gets said a lot I think, but there are no “rules” for Bookstagram- you do you!
Some other bookish things I love: bookish merch, getting a free bookmark when I buy a book, and that feeling you get when you pick up a book at the exact right moment in time.
