Algorithm Predicts Which ‘Game of Thrones’ Characters Will Die

If, like me, you are still trying to mentally prepare for your favorite character’s death this spring, then maybe this can help. German students of computer science have developed an algorithm to predict which characters are most likely to die in the final season of Game of Thrones. So, according to science, who could die next in Game of Thrones? Let’s hope the answer isn’t everyone! (But seriously, let’s also hope it isn’t Dany.)

According to the project supervisor at Technical University of Munich, Guy Yachdav, each character’s survival rate is predicted using technology similar to that of scientific studies for medical treatments. He adds that although the project “relies on data taken from the world of fantasy,” these artificial intelligence techniques “are used in the real world.” So these results ARE real… and we’re really, really nervous.

The technology is called ‘Machine Learning,’ and it allows machines to analyze data and make predictions. The team extracted data from several different Game of Thrones sources and compiled that data by describing each and every character in George R.R. Martin’s world using the same exact points: “house, lovers, marriage, titles, major/minor character, and gender.” The program can then take this information and, using data on earlier character deaths, predict the likelihood of surviving characters… well, surviving!

According to this technology, Daenerys Targaryen has the highest chance of survival with a rate of 99%. Everyone’s favorite sell-sword, Bronn, is most likely to suffer the next death of the series. Where do the rest of the cast fit in? You can check out TUM’s website dedicated to their predictions. My personal favorite, Samwell Tarly, has a 97% chance of survival. The way this show has been going, I’m not quite so sure I trust those odds.

How accurate is this technology in terms of fantasy? Only time will tell. The series is infamous for being highly unpredictable, and everyone has their own ideas on who will sit on the Iron Throne in eight weeks. So let us know! What odds does your favorite character have? Who do you think will win the game of thrones?
