Patti Smith is one of the greats. I still hold that if the Nobel committee wanted to give the prize for literature to a poetic songwriter, the award should have gone to Smith, instead of Dylan. I’m available for fights on this. (Please don’t actually fight me, Dylan is great, I just love Patti so much.) Her music is incredible, her books are some of the best I’ve ever read, (get on that Just Kids buzz, kids) and on top of all this, dear friends, her Instagram presence is pure as the driven snow.

This is me being a happy bum today. I woke up early and wrote, and then spent all day listening to the 13th Floor Elevators. The first chords they strike still contain all the innocent abandon of 1966. So thats what I was up to, just dancing and hanging out with myself. i didn’t do anything else, but i’m happy and my teeshirt is clean.
This is joy. Being young, privileged to share moments such as this. To smile with Allen Ginsberg, our great poet, teacher and activist. To be able to count him as a friend in time of trouble. To be served wisdom as if it were bread when hungry. Happy Birthday dear Allen! How we miss you! How much we know that you are with us always.
