It’s World Book Day! There are many different ways to celebrate. South Africa is celebrating in its own special way.
The South African Book Development Council took to social media today to launch the #readbecause campaign. The hashtag was born out of a desire to engage more young people to do leisurely reading.
Several different literacy organizations such as the Nal’ibali, FunDza Literacy Trust and Van Schaik Bookstores have shown their support for the campaign by telling their followers why they love to read. These groups hope that #readbecause can unify others to promote a reading culture in South Africa.

The campaign comes at a time when literacy amongst young readers has caused concern in South Africa. According to the most recent statistics, 78% of Grade 4 learners are unable to read for comprehension in any language.
Spread the word and tell us why you #readbecause.
